As a commonly used optical component in backlight modules, ultra-thin light boxes and commercial signage, laser light guide plates mainly convert linear light from edge-mounted LEDs into uniform and soft surface light. Many buyers wonder why acrylic panels with laser dot patterns can achieve even lighting, while ordinary transparent boards cannot.
Laser light guide plates are generally made of optical-grade PMMA acrylic or PC transparent substrates. LED strips are installed along the edges of the panel, and light enters the plate from the end face. Inside the smooth transparent substrate, light propagates forward continuously through the total internal reflection effect. Without microstructure interference, light will directly exit from the opposite edge, and the panel surface cannot emit light evenly.
Different from traditional silk-screen light guide plates, laser light guide plates adopt high-precision laser engraving to form numerous micro concave dots (light guiding dots) on the bottom surface of the panel. When light travelling inside the plate hits these laser dots, its propagation angle changes, breaking the original total internal reflection condition. Part of the light is scattered and refracted, emitting vertically outwards from the front side of the light guide plate.
To ensure consistent brightness across the whole panel, the layout of light guiding dots is precisely calculated via optical simulation software. Areas close to the LED light source have stronger luminous intensity, where dots are arranged sparsely. Light energy gradually weakens at positions far from the light source, so dots are distributed more densely. Gradient changes in the size and density of dots compensate for light loss during transmission, effectively preventing uneven lighting issues such as over-bright zones, dim areas and dark spots.
In practical assembly, a reflective film is usually fitted under the light guide plate. Some light failing to emit upwards travels downward and bounces back into the panel after contacting the reflective film, re-entering the optical circulation to reduce light waste and improve light utilization rate. A diffusion film is mounted on the front to further soften light, eliminate visible dot traces and deliver smoother, more uniform illumination.
The whole optical process works based on physical principles. Laser dotting only forms microstructures on the panel surface without printing ink, so there is no risk of coating aging or peeling. Such stable optical structure makes laser light guide plates suitable for applications requiring long-term continuous lighting.
Relying on this optical principle, laser light guide plates are widely applied in industrial display backlights, advertising ultra-thin light boxes, instrument panels, commercial decorative luminous panels, medical equipment display assemblies and more. In addition, laser processing requires no screen making. Light dot schemes can be adjusted flexibly, supporting convenient production of special-shaped and customized sizes.
When selecting laser light guide plates, substrate quality, optical design of dot patterns and laser processing accuracy greatly determine final lighting performance. Proper matching of panel thickness, light source power and dot layout helps maximize the optical performance of light guide plates and meet uniform lighting requirements for various scenarios.
